STAGES: Contemporary art and bicycles on view in the Armory's period rooms
Through October 22, the Armory is home to STAGES, a special preview of artwork and bicycles inspired by Lance Armstrong and the LIVESTRONG message. Featuring original works by 20 prominent artists, including Cai Guo-Qiang, Os Gemeos, Richard Prince, and Tom Sachs, the exhibit will raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer. The preview also includes six unique artist bikes created by Damien Hirst, Marc Newson, KAWS, Shepard Fairey, Yoshitomo Nara, and Kenny Scharf, which will be auctioned by Sotheby’s on November 1 to raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
STAGES is free and open to the public. Please check our website, www.armoryonpark.org for open hours.
Vogue’s Landscape Revisited will open October 30

Armory Find: Bronze Pitcher by Auguste Ledru
This exuberant bronze pitcher, from the Armory's collection, is a wonderful example of French Art Nouveau. It depicts a nude sea nymph emerging from the sea and forming the handle of the vessel. The front of the pitcher features a giant squid while the back shows another nymph and several fish swimming through frothy waves and seaweed. The sinuous, flowing curves of the waves and the squid’s tentacles, as well as the use of Japonesque motifs such as the fish, are hallmarks of the Art Nouveau style.
The vase was designed by sculptor Auguste Ledru (1860-1902) and cast by Susse Freres, the Parisian foundry.
At the Armory, the bronze was used as a trophy—First Prize Figure of Merit for small arms—and was won by Company I at the Peekskill Camp in 1915.
