Building Engineer

Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to experience epic and adventurous presentations that cannot be mounted elsewhere in New York City.

Building Engineer
The Armory seeks a Building Engineer who will bring significant experience in building systems to its operations, programs, and events, and serve as a key member of the facilities team.  The Building Engineer is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Armory’s building infrastructure, including but not limited to HVAC, Building Management System controls, sprinkler and standpipe system, and fire alarm system.  Key responsibilities include performing routine inspections and maintenance, troubleshooting, and performing system repairs, and maintaining records, as well as department and budget management, and staff and vendor supervision.

The Building Engineer reports to the Director of Facilities and takes direction from the Managing Director.  The Building Engineer supervises the Assistant Building Engineer and contracted service providers, and works in collaboration with the Facilities Manager, Director of Security, and staff in operations, design and construction, and production departments.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• Minimum of five years of experience in commercial building systems, especially HVAC and BMS.
• Valid FDNY S-12, S-13, and S-95 Certificates of Fitness, with knowledge of New York City building and fire codes.
• Working knowledge of general plumbing, general electricity, pumps, dampers, actuators, cooling tower operations, and electrical systems.
• Working knowledge of construction, building infrastructure, and engineering, with ability to read technical, mechanical, and architectural drawings and specifications for pre and post construction.
• Familiarity with codes and ordinances affecting construction and repair, especially in historic facilities, with sensitivity to preserving and protecting landmark structures.
• Staff and vendor supervisory experience, with knowledge of safe work practices.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently as well as on a team.
• Ability to take initiative, multi-task, and work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment with changing and conflicting priorities. • Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
• Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed, and to respond to emergency situation on an “on call” basis.
• Experience planning and managing budgets, including cost estimating preferred.
• Experience working in a performing or visual arts institution preferred.
