Human Resources Director

Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to experience epic and adventurous presentations that cannot be mounted elsewhere in New York City.

HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR:
A newly created position, the Director of Human Resources will have the opportunity to create the organization’s first formal human resources role that supports the vision and overall direction of the Armory. He/she/they will work collaboratively to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices and to ensure that the Armory is well-positioned to attract and retain the very best talent.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer on day-to-day matters, the Director of Human Resources also has a dotted-line strategic report to the Founding President and Executive Producer.

The Director will oversee the full range of human resources functions including employee relations, recruitment, talent development and retention, policy development, compensation and benefits administration, and the HR information system. With its relatively lean full-time staff of 55 and its heavy workload, the Armory has a very hands-on culture and is looking for a hands-on individual who thrives in such an environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Genuine interest in the Armory’s mission.
• Significant HR role experience in a complex not-for-profit organization (ideally in a fast-paced performing arts or other cultural arts setting).
• Experience advising senior management on appropriate organization structure and required training and development programs.
• Track record of successful experience in the full range of generalist HR functions.
• Specific success creating and instituting processes and procedures to support growth.
• Ability to train, motivate, and develop staff.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of work.
• Superior organizational skills—able to prioritize and handle deadlines.
• Track record of helping to facilitate change within a complex, creative organization.
• Effective communicator who is committed to transparency.
• Well-developed listening and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to reinforce adherence to policies and controls.
• Familiar with commonly used HR software.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to drive consensus and make critical decisions.
• Strong service orientation.
• Collaborative, hands-on team player.
• An open and accessible style.
• Ability to attend Armory events and activities after regular business hours, as needed.
• An undergraduate degree is highly desirable.
