Human Resources Director
Posted on August 27, 2021

Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to experience epic and adventurous presentations that cannot be mounted elsewhere in New York City.

HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR (SEARCH REOPENED):
The new position of Director of Human Resources will have the opportunity to create and build the Armory’s first formal human resources role and will play an important part in supporting its vision and overall direction. He/she/they will advance an organizational culture that is dedicated to the highest standards of excellence across all disciplines, and that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion to ensure that the Armory is well-positioned to attract and retain the very best talent.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director will oversee and execute a full range of human resources functions as a one-person department, including recruitment, talent development and retention, performance management, onboarding and offboarding, policies and procedures, employee relations, organizational structure, compensation and benefits, and the HR information system. With a relatively lean full-time staff of 60 and heavy workload, the Armory has a very hands-on, in-person culture and is looking for an individual who thrives in such an environment.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Genuine interest in the Armory’s mission and in arts and culture.
• Significant HR experience in a complex and highly dynamic not-for-profit organization, ideally in a fast-paced performing arts or other cultural arts setting.
• Demonstrated success in and hands-on approach to the full range of generalist HR functions, especially in developing and implementing effective policies, procedures, and systems to facilitate and support change and growth.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of work.
• Knowledge of and compliance experience with HR laws, regulations, and best practices, combined with ability to advise management and staff on these matters.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and proactively manage multiple priorities with tight and changing deadlines.
• Exceptional communicator with well-developed listening and interpersonal skills, an open and accessible style, and a strong service orientation.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Strength in working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team, with skill identifying solutions and driving consensus.
• Skill and judgment in handling complex, confidential, and nuanced matters with professionalism and sensitivity.
• High degree of proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Forms; as well as in HRIS and payroll software such as ADP.
• Ability to attend Armory events and activities outside of regular business hours, as needed.
• Conversation knowledge of Spanish a plus.
• An undergraduate degree is highly desirable.
