Eiko & Koma

Eiko & Koma, Japanese-born choreographer/dancers, have since 1972 created a unique theater of movement out of stillness, shape, light, sound, and time. They have collaborated with a wide range of artists but, for most of their works, Eiko & Koma create their own sets and costumes, choreographing on their own bodies. They have presented their works in theaters, museums, galleries, and at universities and festivals world-wide, including numerous appearances at the American Dance Festival, five seasons at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival, four seasons at the Joyce Theater, and a month-long “living” gallery installation at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Eiko & Koma wish to present their dance as a part of landscape, an offering, and a process rather than a product.

From 2009-2012, Eiko & Koma are working on a multi-faceted Retrospective Project, which contemplates Eiko & Koma’s nearly 40-year collaborative history. Prompted by the idea that the visual art retrospective can be applied effectively to the performing arts, the Retrospective Project will include commissions for a new “living installation” and stage work, reworking of older pieces, outdoor performances, photo exhibitions, video installations, showings of their media dances and documentaries, publication of a retrospective catalog, workshops and other educational activities.

Eiko & Koma are permanent residents of the United States. They live in New York City, where they perform regularly and offer occasional Delicious Movement Workshops. Learn more about Eiko & Koma at
